Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal or Le Male: which one in Morocco?

Scandal, Scandal Absolu, Le Male Elixir, Elixir Absolu, Divine: 7 Jean Paul Gaultier fragrances compared on notes, longevity and price. 10ml from 135 MAD.

by MYF FragrancesPublished on September 23, 20266 min read
Scandal Pour Homme by Jean Paul Gaultier, eau de parfum available at MYF

With Jean Paul Gaultier, you don't pick a fragrance so much as a family. Le Male revolves around lavender and vanilla, Scandal built its name on caramel, and Divine is the newest arrival on the women's side. Seven references from these lines are in the MYF catalogue, all eaux de parfum, and they are close enough to one another that it's easy to stall in front of them.

This guide leaves out the Le Beau and La Belle line: we already covered it in our piece on Le Beau Narcisse and La Belle Rosea, and Le Beau Paradise Garden has its own head-to-head with Wadi. Here we deal with Scandal and Le Male: which one, for whom, and when.

Two things stand out before the details. First, the price spread is narrow: 1,300 to 1,650 MAD a bottle, 135 to 160 MAD a decant. Budget isn't what decides here; how you'll wear it is. Second, only the two Elixirs are rated Beast — if maximum projection is what you're after, you already have your answer.

Scandal Pour Homme and Scandal Absolu: caramel, two ways

Scandal Pour Homme is built on just three notes: clary sage on top, caramel in the heart, vetiver in the base. That's its strength. The sage gives a green, almost aromatic opening, the caramel follows without ever turning into candy, and the vetiver dries it all down with an earthy edge. It's the only men's fragrance in this selection that our catalogue also lists for daily wear, on top of nights out and dates.

Scandal Absolu takes the same building blocks and enriches them. Caramel moves to the top alongside tangerine, clary sage shares the heart with orange blossom, and the base lines up tonka bean, vetiver and cedar. The result is rounder, woodier and sweeter from the first second. It's an evening fragrance (nights out and dates only), and it costs slightly less than the Pour Homme.

Pour Homme or Absolu?

You want a Scandal you can wear on a Tuesday morning: Pour Homme, drier and simpler. You keep it for dinners and going out: Absolu, where orange blossom and tonka make a warmer trail. To judge what a "boosted" version really adds, our article on Intense and Absolu flankers lays out the method.

Le Male: three intensities on the same skeleton

All three Le Male share a heart of lavender and cinnamon and a base of vanilla and tonka bean. What changes is the opening and the density.

  • Le Male Le Parfum (2019) opens on cardamom and ginger. It's the spiciest of the three and the most polished: rated Strong, with office and formal occasions among its uses. The Le Male you can wear to a meeting in Casablanca as easily as to a wedding.
  • Le Male Elixir (2020) swaps the spices for mint and bergamot. The fresh start doesn't last, and what remains is a loud vanilla lavender rated Beast. It also made our list of the longest-lasting fragrances.
  • Le Male Elixir Absolu (2024) stacks everything: cardamom, lavender and mint on top, cinnamon, orris and lavender in the heart, then vanilla, tonka, Virginia cedar and patchouli. The orris adds a powdery texture, the patchouli a depth the other two lack. The most expensive of the family at 1,650 MAD, and the most complete.

For women: Scandal or Divine

Scandal (2022) keeps the line's caramel DNA: caramel and mandarin on top, jasmine and orange blossom in the heart, patchouli, vanilla and sandalwood in the base. An unapologetic, sensual gourmand floral for nights out and dates. It's also the cheapest of the seven at 1,300 MAD a bottle.

Divine (2023) goes another way: mandarin, pink pepper and a salt note on top, then jasmine, lily of the valley and orange blossom, over a base of marshmallow, vanilla and sandalwood. The salt stops the marshmallow from getting cloying, and the lily of the valley brightens the heart. Where Scandal is a night fragrance, Divine also works by day: our catalogue lists it for daily wear, nights out and dates.

What about La Belle?

La Belle, La Belle Rosea and La Belle Paradise Garden are covered in our article on the Le Beau / La Belle line. If you're torn between Scandal and La Belle: both sit on a vanilla base, but La Belle is built around pear and tonka bean rather than caramel.

Day or night: the verdict by occasion

  • Office and daytime, men: Le Male Le Parfum, then Scandal Pour Homme. They're the only two men's picks our catalogue ties to daytime use.
  • Parties, weddings, nights out, men: Le Male Elixir or Elixir Absolu. Rated Beast, they last a whole night — which also means two sprays, not five.
  • Dates, men: Scandal Absolu, softer and woodier than the Elixirs.
  • Daytime, women: Divine, thanks to its salty, peppery opening.
  • Evening, women: Scandal, for its caramel and patchouli-sandalwood base.

A word on heat: all of these rest on vanilla, caramel or tonka. In the middle of a Marrakech summer, the Elixirs in particular quickly get too heavy for daytime. Keep them for evenings, Ramadan nights or winter, and turn to Divine or Le Male Le Parfum when it's 38 degrees out.

Beast needs a light hand

Le Male Elixir and Elixir Absolu are the two most powerful fragrances in this selection. At the office or in a car, one or two sprays are plenty.

Where to start

Our advice

Men: get 10ml decants of Scandal Pour Homme and Le Male Elixir, 280 MAD in total. One is the best daytime entry point, the other the evening benchmark; you'll quickly know which way you lean, then move up to Absolu or Elixir Absolu if you want more. Women: Scandal and Divine in 10ml, 305 MAD — one for night, one for day.

A 10ml decant is enough to judge longevity on your own skin and in your own climate. It's all explained in our 10ml decant guide.
