For women: Black Opium, Libre, Libre Intense

Black Opium (2014) is the best-known YSL for women, and for good reason: its signature is recognisable in a lift. Pear, pink pepper and orange blossom up top, then a heart of coffee, jasmine, bitter almond and licorice, over a base of vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood and cedar. It's a dark gourmand: sweet, but held in check by the coffee and patchouli. Strong longevity. Worn for evenings and dates, and — by those who really love it — every day.

Libre (2019) is the other pillar. Lavender and orange blossom at the opening, jasmine and musk in the heart, vanilla and cedar at the base. Lavender, usually a men's note, gives it an almost strict cleanness: it's the YSL for women most at home at the office and on dressy occasions. Strong longevity, a clean trail.

Libre Intense (2021) keeps the orange blossom and jasmine but changes everything around them. The top moves to red mandarin and saffron, the base to vanilla, ambrofix and cashmeran. The result is warmer, more ambery, more evening. For dinners, parties and weddings.

Black Opium or Libre Intense: our verdict

These are the two "evening" YSL fragrances for women, and we're always asked which one to pick. They play in entirely different registers.

• Black Opium is a gourmand: coffee, almond, licorice, vanilla. It reads sweet and warm, with a dark edge. If you like fragrances you want to taste, it's this one.
• Libre Intense is an amber floral: orange blossom stays at the centre, saffron and amber give it glow. Less sweet, more elegant, more "evening dress".

Our verdict: Black Opium if you want seduction and gourmand, plus the better price of the pair (250 MAD less for the bottle). Libre Intense if you want a chic floral that lasts without tipping into dessert. For a summer wedding we lean towards Libre Intense: the orange blossom stays legible in the heat, where Black Opium's coffee and vanilla can quickly fill a room. For men: Y, La Nuit de l'Homme, My Self, BabyCat

Y Eau de Parfum (2018) is the house's modern masculine. Bergamot, ginger and apple on top, sage, geranium and juniper berries in the heart, vetiver, cedar, tonka bean, amberwood and olibanum at the base. Fresh at the opening, woody afterwards, with strong longevity. The fragrance you put on Monday morning and can still smell in the evening.

La Nuit de l'Homme (2009), an eau de toilette, is built around cardamom. Bergamot and mint join it up top, lavender, cedar and vetiver in the heart, caraway, cumin and vetiver at the base. Spicy, soft, a little mysterious — a close-range scent. Its longevity is moderate: it's shared at arm's length rather than filling a room.

My Self (2020) pairs bergamot and blackcurrant up top, rose and jasmine in the heart, vanilla and patchouli at the base. A floral masculine, rose and jasmine front and centre, for men who find fresh woods too tame. Strong longevity, works at the office as well as on a date.

BabyCat Raw Bourbon (2022) stands apart. A limited edition: bourbon whiskey and cardamom on top, tobacco and leather in the heart, vanilla, sandalwood and cedar at the base. A winter and evening fragrance, rich and boozy. At 4,000 MAD for the bottle, this is the textbook case for starting with a decant — 400 MAD for 10ml, or 200 MAD for 5ml.

Y or La Nuit de l'Homme: our verdict

The classic YSL men's dilemma. Two fragrances from the same house, 140 MAD apart on the bottle, with opposite personalities.

Our verdict: Y Eau de Parfum for most men, and especially as a first YSL. It's more versatile, it lasts longer, and its ginger-and-apple freshness works as well in Casablanca in July as in a meeting in December. If you're only going to own one, it's this one.

Choose La Nuit de l'Homme if you already have a fresh daytime scent and want something more intimate for the evening: the cardamom and cumin are warmer and more distinctive than anything Y offers.
